The Spanish Chair

The Spanish Chair, is Børge Mogensen’s masterful interpretation of a type of traditional chair that is often found in areas influenced by ancient Islamic culture. Mogensen drew inspiration from a trip to Spain in 1958, modernizing its shape and eliminating the elaborate engravings while maintaining one important feature: the wide armrests.

Description

With The Spanish Chair, Mogensen has expanded his work with solid oak and leather. The chair was launched in 1958 as part of an innovative exhibition on living space. The Spanish Chair is a type of traditional chair and is very common in areas influenced by ancient Islamic culture, from Spain to northern India. Børge Mogensen modernized the design by removing the elaborate carvings and creating a version with his usual geometric precision. However, it has kept the most important feature: the wide armrests which give the chair its distinctive character. The wide armrests also serve as a practical place to put a cup or glass.
